Find Your Season: A Guide to Color Analysis
Have you ever tried on a dress that looked lovely on the hanger and somehow fell flat in the mirror? Then tried the same silhouette in a different shade and suddenly looked rested, bright and entirely yourself? That difference usually has little to do with the dress and everything to do with the color.
That's the idea behind color analysis. It's one of the simplest ways to make getting dressed feel easier.
What is color analysis?
Color analysis looks at the natural coloring of your skin, hair and eyes to find the shades that flatter you most. It rests on three qualities:
- Undertone: whether your skin leans warm (golden, peachy, olive) or cool (pink, rosy, blue-red).
- Depth: whether your overall coloring is light or deep.
- Clarity: whether your features look bright and clear or soft and blended.
Put those together and most people fall into one of four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. Each season has its own palette of colors that work with your natural coloring rather than against it.
The right colors make your skin look clearer, your eyes brighter and your whole look more polished, often before anyone notices what you're wearing.
The four seasons at a glance
Spring is warm, light and luminous. Springs glow in clear, sunny shades like coral, peach, golden yellow, turquoise and warm pink. Ivory and camel flatter them more than stark white or black.
Summer is cool, soft and graceful. Summers shine in muted shades with a hint of grey, such as powder blue, dusty rose, lavender, sage and mauve. Tonal dressing is their secret.
Autumn is warm, rich and earthy. Autumns come alive in spice-market colors like terracotta, rust, mustard, olive, deep teal and chocolate brown. Gold jewelry and textured fabrics feel made for them.
Winter is cool, clear and striking. Winters wear saturated jewel tones beautifully, including royal blue, emerald, true red and sapphire, and they are one of the few seasons that can wear crisp black and white with ease.
