The MNY Spotlight
Meet Abbey Kowalec, Founder of AngelBaked
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi, my name is Abbey! I am a full time cookie artist and content creator living in NYC. Before starting my custom cookie business, AngelBaked, I was a professional dancer in NYC and danced for the Knicks City Dancers, as well as the Radio City Rockettes. Growing up I trained vigorously in all styles of dance including ballet, modern, and jazz, and knew that dance was a passion I wanted to pursue as a career. Although much of childhood consisted of dance, I had also had a strong passion for visual arts and loved to paint and draw in my free time, which later transitioned into cookie decorating.

You began your professional journey as an NBA dancer for the New York City Knicks and Radio City Rockettes! What was this experience like? How did you get this opportunity?
Both jobs were an absolute dream come true! The Knicks City Dancer audition was one of my first auditions post graduation at Marymount Manhattan College and I had a friend who was already on the team who recommended I audition. I had no idea what to expect, but soon fell in love with the style of dance as well as the women involved with the team. After booking the job, I was with the team for over three years and had the incredible opportunity of dancing at Madison Square Garden, aka “The World’s Most Famous Arena”. Of course, dancing for over 20,000 people is an opportunity I will never forget, but being a part of such a close knit group of inspiring women is an experience I will always cherish. Then in 2019, after auditioning for five consecutive years, I booked my first season as Radio City Rockette in the Christmas Spectacular. Becoming a Radio City Rockette was always a dream of mine growing up, so when I booked the job I was ecstatic to be a part of another legendary group of women.
When did your journey as an artist and baker begin?
Growing up, I always enjoyed painting and drawing and found much inspiration from my great aunt who introduced me to various art mediums. It wasn’t until I baked my first batch of custom cookies for my teammates on the Knicks City Dancers in 2016 that I fell in love with cookie decorating. I always enjoyed baking and learning how to use royal icing as an art medium seemed to be the perfect recipe for baked goods and creativity.
Your cookies not only look delicious, but are a true piece of art! Where do you draw your inspiration for what types of designs to create?
My customers are my biggest inspiration! When creating new designs, I love to ask my customers about their favorite things, as well as themes/ideas they had in mind for their order. From there, I’ll find additional inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram. I also love looking for inspiration throughout New York City. Recently, my favorite subject to create in cookie form has been architecture and NYC has unlimited architecture inspiration to pull from.

What has been your favorite project to work on?
I recently worked on a large order with DIOR, which was an absolute dream. Over the course of one month I decorated over 500 cookies for their holiday events, featuring their Lady Dior bag, Lady art bags, Gris Dior Fragrance, and their 30 Montaigne Bar Jacket.
Where did you learn to bake? Is this something you taught yourself, or learned from a loved one?
Most people don’t believe it when I say I am completely self taught, both in baking and cookie decorating. Other than baking the occasional Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe with my mom growing up, I learned all of my sugar cookie skills from online research, as well as a lot of trial and error.

What has been your proudest moment thus far with AngelBaked thus far, and what do you hope to achieve next?
I think gaining such a supportive and loyal customer base has been something I am really proud of. When taking my business full time in 2023, I never imagined having such an incredible group of customers, both on the individual and brand side, and I would not be where I am today without those supporters. In the future, I hope to expand my team and eventually move into a small bakery space within NYC. My goal is to share my cookies with people world wide so that everyone can experience “art you can eat”!
