The MNY Spotlight

Sydne Summer, Founder of Sydne Style

This week's Tastemaker is Sydne Summer, an LA based fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blogger.

Introduce yourself!

Hi! I’m Sydne Summer, the founder of Sydne Style. I started the daily space in 2009 as an outlet to inspire women with aspirational but achievable fashion. I currently live in West Hollywood with my adorable rescue dog, Jack Jack, who you often see on my instagram, @sydnesummer.

What characteristics (cultural, personality etc) make you unique?

One characteristic that makes me unique is my background as a fashion editor and entertainment journalist. I began my blogging journey when I was a fashion editor at E! Entertainment and Style Network. My favorite memory was seeing a woman’s bright smile after styling her in an outfit that made her feel like a million bucks.

What motivated you to start your own blog, Sydne Style?

I've always loved dressing up. When I was working as a fashion editor, one of my colleagues suggested taking photos of my outfits and sharing them online to inspire others (aka blogging). It was new at the time and I felt so uncomfortable that I took headless shots of my outfits. When I realized that was strange, I did full length photos of my outfits to help women think outside the box when it comes to getting dressed.

When reporting on trends to LA news outlets like Access Hollywood, E! and KTLA, where does your style inspiration come from? How do you find ways to stay ahead of the curve on new trends?

Fashion week plays a large role in trend forecasting. Last year was the first fashion week I missed due to Covid. Because of my celebrity background, I also keep up to date on the latest celeb trends which inspired a lot of my segments.

What is the most rewarding aspect about what you do?

The most rewarding aspect is helping women feel better about themselves through fashion and beauty. I save every email, dm and comment and re-read them with a smile on my face that I could make an impact in someone's life.

How do you interpret “invest in yourself?” and what are the types of things you do to invest in/ empower yourself?

I interpret investing in yourself as making yourself a priority, something we often forget to do. And it doesn't have to cost anything either. Investing in yourself can be carving out me-time in your schedule for some self care. I've invested in myself through education, investing in my business and spending money on self-care.

Why is it important to you to empower women?

The more women that are empowered, the bigger difference we can make in the world. Success is rarely accomplished alone. I love the quote that "behind every woman is a tribe of successful women, who have her back." I'm lucky to have a strong support system of amazing women in my life. And in return, my hope is that I can provide that for others.

What draws you to the Mestiza brand?

I love that the brand was founded by two strong women, who made it their goal to empower other women through their designs. I also appreciate the timeless designs. That way you can wear the dresses to numerous occasions.

How did you like your Mestiza piece?! Any details on how it fit or made you feel?

I felt like a princess in my Mestiza dress! The fit was impeccable, and hugged my curves in all the right places. I also loved the material. It sucked me in and doesn't wrinkle, so perfect for an event!

Please share an inspirational tip to someone looking to follow your footsteps.
One tip is to start small, whether it's beginning a blog or a business. The fear of failure lessons when you set realistic goals, allowing you to at least start working towards your dreams.
