There’s something magical about returning to New York after summer. The city comes alive again. There’s a crispness in the air, an unmistakable energy on the streets, and, as I always say, New York “peacocks” this time of year… there’s an indescribable glow. Everyone is excited to get dressed again, reunite and let the social activities commence!

For my family, September is full of new beginnings. Clementine is starting kindergarten at a new school, and Elliott is heading back to second grade, reunited with his buddies after a summer apart. Our calendar quickly fills with school orientations, parent coffees, back-to-school events, and the chance to meet new teachers and families.

At Mestiza, it’s also our busiest and most exciting time of year! We’re presenting our Spring 2027 collection during market, which means days spent shuttling between our office and tradeshows, evenings with clients and friends of the brand who are in town for Fashion Week. It’s busy, exhilarating, and exactly why I love New York in the fall.

Fall dressing, for me, is about thoughtful layering, richer colors, and timeless pieces that work just as well for a morning meeting as they do for an impromptu dinner. While I naturally gravitate toward prints (occupational hazard!), I also rely on versatile separates that can be styled multiple ways throughout the season. You don’t really need a lot… you need the right pieces that can work together with ease.

Easier said than done, but we designed the Mestiza Fall Collection to be just that... a useful yet beautifully intertwined wardrobe, pre-styled and ready to shop.

Here are the Mestiza pieces (and other basics) I’ll be reaching for again and again this fall.

 

The Taylor Pant + Quinn Top

Cioccolato Brown

If there was one color defining my wardrobe this season, it’s chocolate brown. Dare I say it but, I’m over black.

Chocolate feels softer, richer, and unexpectedly versatile. It has all the sophistication of black but with a warmth that feels perfect for fall.

Worn together, the Taylor Pant and Quinn Top create an effortlessly polished look that’s ideal for long office days or dinner after work. Separately, they’re just as useful. I’ll wear the pants with a cream sweater later in the season, while the Quinn

Top looks equally chic with denim.

To finish the look, I’d add our Mestiza Tassel Necklace, gold jewelry, and my brown suede Manolo Blahnik Maysale mules.

 

The Friday Pant

Morning Gingham

While they pair beautifully with our Quinn Top for a polished head-to-toe look, I love styling them more casually. I’d wear them with our Finley Cardigan or my favorite crisp white Tate button-down from AYR, slightly tucked in, with Ann Mashburn’s Cecilia Flats.

It’s the kind of outfit I’d wear on a Friday filled with design reviews, morning coffee meet-ups, and an impromptu after-work art tour at Sotheby’s. They’re comfortable enough to wear all day, but polished enough that I never feel underdressed.

 

The Demi Midi Skirt + Isabel Cardigan

Evergreen Lattice

Matching sets are one of my favorite wardrobe investments because they instantly make getting dressed easier.

Together, the Demi Skirt and Isabel Cardigan feel refined and feminine... appropriate for a ladies’ luncheon, a museum afternoon, or one of the many fall charity events that fill my calendar.

They also easily become separates that can be workhorses in your closet.

I’ll wear the Isabel Cardigan buttoned as a sweater with straight-leg vintage-wash or white jeans, a classic leather belt, and Chanel cap-toe slingbacks for an effortless Upper East Side uniform.

The Demi Skirt takes on a completely different personality when paired with our Finley Cardigan and tall leather boots, making it feel relaxed, cozy, and ready for cooler weather.

The Casablanca Midi Dress

Venetian Patchwork

Every woman needs a great midi dress in her closet and the Casablanca Midi does the trick.

It’s one of the most versatile silhouettes I own because it transitions effortlessly throughout the day.

The Venetian Patchwork print does all the work (and dare I say, scarf prints are in!), so I keep everything else simple. I love adding our Mestiza Susan Cuff for a little polish and finishing the look with my Manolo Maysales.

It’s the dress I’ll reach for whenever I want to feel put together with almost no effort.

 

The Sadie Top + Blake Crop Pant

Navy

I feel the same way about navy as I do about brown… it’s a great alternative to black and universally flattering on everyone.

There’s also something about navy that feels quintessentially New York… classic, understated, and always elegant. This set is my answer to days packed with meetings when I want to feel polished without looking overly formal.

The Blake cropped pant is incredibly flattering and easy to wear with flats or heels, while the Sadie Top has just enough structure to feel tailored without sacrificing comfort.

I’ll wear the set with my Chanel cap-toe slingbacks and a chic pair of sunglasses

(I’ve been wearing these shades non-stop for the past several months).

The older I get, the more I appreciate a wardrobe filled with pieces that truly work for my life. Clothes that can take me from school drop-off to buyer meetings, from Fashion Week dinners to Saturday lunch with friends, without ever feeling like I need to change or think too much about what to wear.

And if there’s one thing New York reminds me every September, it’s that getting dressed should always feel like part of all the fun you’re having!
