The MNY Spotlight

Meet LeAnn Darland and Tara Hankinson, Founders of TALEA Beer Co.

Introduce yourself!

We are the co-founders of TALEA, NYC’s first and only female-founded brewery. We’re also ex-MBA students, runners, moms, and lovers of wine as well as beer. We have four taprooms across NYC that are known for beautiful designs, warm hospitality, and our amazing beers from fruited sours that taste like margaritas to refreshing pilsners.

You started Talea Beer with the goal to create an approachable beer – one crafted with high-quality ingredients, low-bitterness, and fruit-forward flavors. What motivated this approach?

We both loved beer but felt that craft brewers weren’t considering women as a viable market. So many craft brands are masculine at best (sports-inspired packaging) and sexist at worst (busty women on their cans). We wanted to start a company that introduce women to craft beer through our flavor profiles, our physical spaces, and the brand collaborations we do with surprising partners like Levain Bakery and Olipop.

You were intentional about creating an environment that was different from the stereotypical male-designed breweries (think industrial beams, televisions with football playing). Instead, your taprooms foster a welcoming environment with pops of color where you are more focused about enjoying the experience. Why were these design elements important to you?

People eat and drink with their eyes. It doesn’t matter how great a drink tastes - the environment has a huge impact on your sensory experience. We knew we wanted to create a welcoming space that encouraged guests to get comfortable and explore. Elements like layers of color and texture make the space surprising and beautiful. Functional pieces like high quality chairs make it comfortable. All those little decisions amount to our guests wanting to come back and stay longer.

Many of your in-person events are centered around fostering connection - for example you host singles night, taproom yoga, and pop-culture trivia. What is the TALEA community like?

We have a culturally curious community of predominantly women. A typical craft brewery in NYC has about 70% male customers - our customers are 70% female. Our community is welcoming, brave, and excited to experience life. They trust our curation and they love having experiences which is why our events are so popular.

Which TALEA beers & wines would you drink while wearing the below Mestiza styles?!

The Carmen Mini Dress in red/ivoryHaba Haba Splash Sour Ale - a sour brewed with mango, lime, and sea salt. The slight heat reminds us of the red accents on this dress. Plus, the can is very colorful and would match perfectly.

The Citrine GownThis gown has to be paired with our Strawberry Colada Tart Deco Sour IPA. It’s brewed with strawberries, pineapple, and coconut. It’s fun, playful, yet elegant.

The Bea Reversible Top & Ragu Shorts: Weekender Key Lime Lager - a bright, light lager brewed with key lime and seasalt that is zippy and fun just like this outfit.

What is currently exciting you in the brewery space?

The growth of lower-alcohol styles like pilsners and lagers. Lower alcohol beers work really well for our adjuncts (additional brewing ingredients) like chai tea and sea salt because they let those flavors shine. We love that customers are seeking out low ABV options.

How are you styling your Mestiza pieces?

LeAnn: Natural leather sandals, wavy hair down, and diamond earrings.

Tara: Swedish hasbeens sandal clogs, a bright red manicure, and a low ponytail

What do you admire about the Mestiza brand?

The craftsmanship. The pieces are really well made and will last.

How does wearing your Mestiza piece make you feel?
Festive! Like we could put this outfit on and be ready for a TALEA wine spritzer on a terrace
