Designing a Wedding That Feels Personal, Stylish, and Timeless

At Mestiza New York, we believe weddings - much like personal style - should feel deeply personal. The most memorable celebrations are the ones that reflect the couple behind them: their story, their aesthetic, and the small details that make the day unmistakably theirs.

During our latest Living in Style virtual panel, we brought together leaders across bridal styling, event planning, and stationery design to discuss the evolving landscape of modern weddings, from defining a bride’s style vision to creating meaningful details guests remember long after the celebration ends.

Stationery designer Cheree Berry shared a beautiful analogy for how she approaches invitation suites - thinking about them like a house. Each element represents a different “room,” creating opportunities to introduce new details while still maintaining a cohesive design language.

The formal invitation itself often serves as the classic anchor, setting the tone with timeless typography and structure. From there, additional pieces such as save-the-dates, rehearsal dinner invitations, inserts, menus, and day-of materials, can become opportunities to introduce personality and creativity.

Subtle motifs, color cues, or design elements can tie each piece back to the couple, allowing the entire experience to feel thoughtful and layered from the very first envelope to the final toast.

While the ceremony dress is often the centerpiece of bridal fashion, modern brides are dressing for an entire series of events leading up to the big day.

Julie Sabatino's advice is finding silhouettes that truly work for you: pieces that feel flattering, comfortable, and aligned with your personal style, while also choosing looks that suit the tone of each individual event.

Rather than forcing every look to match, Alessandra Perez-Rubio encourages brides to think about how each outfit reflects the moment it belongs to.An engagement party may call for something celebratory and playful, while a rehearsal dinner might lean more polished or dramatic. 

Together, these pieces form a cohesive story that captures the full experience of the wedding weekend.

4. Modern Brides Are Embracing Color and Pattern

While classic ivory gowns remain timeless, many brides today are experimenting with subtle color and pattern to express their style.
